A message from Terry Mungai
Miss World Kenya franchise director, (Founder & CEO of Ashleys Kenya Ltd)
This year marks the 70th Anniversary of the Miss World Pageant. It also marks the 18th Anniversary of Ashleys Kenya Limited, having the franchise of this great global competition which has attracted thousands of contestants in Kenya. During our tenure, we have witnessed the transformation of many young men and women who have also had their world opened to numerous opportunities.
Close to 3 decades ago, the President of the Miss World Organization, Julia Morley coined the phrase, Beauty with a Purpose, a rallying call that has been instrumental in guiding our ethos in this beauty pageant. Since 2004, our winners in both the male and female categories, have embodied these ethos and adopted causes that have impacted millions of lives across the country.
Whilst our boot camps have transformed the lives of thousands of contestants by training them in life skills that they have used to populate every airline in the world, advertising campaigns in Kenya, and numerous other industries.
It is against this backdrop that Ashleys Kenya, a progressive organization that has embraced sustainability as a core component in our business, has dedicated this year to go green.
This is a move that entails incorporating energy-saving measures in all our operations.
To us, going green means embracing a way of life that enables us to conserve the environment by reducing, reusing, and recycling items. In doing so, we are practicing environmental mindfulness while embracing a lifestyle that appreciates and supports the preservation of our natural resources, habitats, and biodiversity.
To support this, we are incorporating green energy such as solar to heat our water, use more natural lighting to illuminate our business premises, and conserve electricity in whichever ways we can.
In addition, in honor of the 10th anniversary of Wangari Maathai’s death, as an organization, we are committing to plant over 3000 trees (1 for every student and staff within our organization). In doing so, we want to honor her legacy and ensure we have a green and sustainable future for our children to inherit.
Moreover, our overarching aim is to support efforts geared towards the reduction of pollution and eliminating wastage while maintaining the natural ecological balance on earth so that all living things can thrive in their natural habitat.
We are cognizant of the fact, that our efforts may not change the world immediately. However, they will contribute towards global efforts to make our environment clean and also reduce the emission of greenhouse gases which have been responsible for climate change across the world.
“I’m very conscious of the fact that you can’t do it alone. It’s teamwork. When you do it alone you run the risk that when you are no longer there nobody else will do it.” – Wangari Maathai
In the same way, we invite you to join our team and the global push towards zero carbon emissions, reduction of energy consumption and use of renewable energy, and our desire to make the world a safe place for us all and our children’s children who will inherit both our land and mistakes.
On to pageant matters, we notably skipped the event in 2020 owing to the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) Pandemic.
However, we are proud to announce that this year, we are back, bigger and better than we’ve ever been before! This year, Miss World Kenya will be held virtually in August but with a twist. Our goal this year is to continue our trajectory of consistently placing in the top 5 of the international pageant and hopefully, make this our year to bring the crown home! Before that, we hope to host a star-studded event that celebrates unity, culture, and cultivation.
Thus, we take this opportunity to thank you, our sponsors, partners, and associates for your consistent support. Just like in the previous years, we invite you to partner with us to make this event a success and to change the lives of our youth. We look forward to having you as part of our journey.
